And we're back

Ola! My name is Roselyne Shiyenze; a 26 year old Kenyan born and bred fashion Designer. I have had the privilege of running a fashion label for the past 8 years. It has been a journey of growth, too many failures but I held closely to my wins. Celebrating small, big wins fuel consistency and resilience.2019 was my hardest years, I struggled with many things and the daily suicidal thoughts that enveloped my mind, and this made it hard to progress or become any creative. I had a great family support and clients who made the journey bearable….At the close of 2019, I took a plain paper and cursed the year that was. There was nothing beautiful to pen down about it. I was grateful to God for giving me a second chance, I purposed to utilize it and go for it.

With bated breath I ushered 2020 with positivity and great energy. The year began with so much optimism but I had a great strain in business. We had very few clients and even meeting our fixed costs became a challenge. We accumulated a lot of unpaid bills that led us to be auctioned. With sadness, I saw what I had taken eight years to build crumble. I was crushed but I decided to take it positively as the future had great things to offer. This was on 10th  March so it was still early for me to write off my story spend at least 2 days sleeping, crying, disappointed and just letting it sink in on what just happened. I was accustomed to tailoring and having a business so having nothing to rely on and do was hard.  Being a bread winner for the family it meant that our source of income was cut off! I had to think faster than expected since time was not on my side.

On 13th March, the first corona case was discovered in Kenya. It caused panic and most businesses were closing. I had already closed so it was not something new. I then began making masks from home and supplying to clients. It was a great experience as I got to perfect my skills and I saved money to hopefully reopen later in the year. Few of my clients had given me food and shelter so the goal was to work on rebuilding capital. My target was June, but I made it in August. During the season I spent so much stocking our online shop and creating our branding materials. It’s been a journey of faith and am happy that you have given me an opportunity to serve you again.
